Straffe Hendrik triple

History

In fact, this beer was first brewed fo a special occasion: In the city of Bruges, a statue of Saint arnold was to be inaugurated. The mayor of Bruges asked Henri IV and his daughter to brew a new beer for this event.

Named after all of the Henri’s that were part of the brewing history, the beer was well appreciated and became part of the assortment. “Straffe Hendrik” means “strong Hendrik” and is sort of a tribute to all Hendriks from the family.

The brand and commercialization was many years in hands of an other brewery but in 2008, current CEO Xavier Vanneste could bring the beer back where it belongs: at brewery de halve maan. They brewed it again following the original recipe, an authentic triple.

The beer

Straffe Hendrik is a top fermented beer with no less than 6 different types of malt, combined with Saaz and Styrian Golding hops.

Next to a lot of malts, the beer also has a lot of aroma’s. Depending on the age (The beer evolves in the bottle) you can smell black pepper, coriander and ginger.
Refermentation in the bottle takes the shelf life of this beer up to 2 years. I couldn’t wait that long 🙂

With a current score of 89 on beeradvocate, and 3.76 on untappd it is clear that this beer is still very well appreciated
