Trappist beer brewed at the Scourmont Abbey

I’ve seen some Trappist monastery’s in my life. 2 of them left a strong impression on me in a special way. The serenity, the surrounding, the atmosphere… The Scourmont Abbey was one of them. Scourmont is a township between Chimay and the French border. It’s an environment with a lot of meadows and forests, and it calms down even the most nervous personality’s like me.

Although it’s not possible to visit the brewery on your own, but you can take a quiet walk in the surroundings of the abbey. Of course we beer-lovers dont come for a quiet walk alone. We want to taste the work of the monks because we know we support a better world by drinking trappists. Oh yes, and we just love beer… almost forgot.

Auberge de Poteaupré ! That’s the place to be. You are welcome here for a drink, a lunch or dinner, or even to stay over as the bar-restaurant also has 7 chimay-themed rooms.
In the café, you can taste all types of Chimay beers in bottles of 33 or 75 cl. Some of those are served from the tap to in 3 sizes (18,25 and 33cl). Handy if you want to taste them all. On top of that you can also opt for a beer tasting with 3 or 4 types. Next to beer tastings, you can also make the experience complete by adding a cheese tasting with 4 or 5 types of Chimay cheese.

Check their website for current offers.

For those who want to know more of the background of the abbey, the beer and the cheese, we can recommend to first visit the Chimay experience, which is a permanent exhibition that ends with a tasting in the Auberge de poteaupré.

As for beercountry.be, we will publish notes about all of the Chimay beers within the first few weeks. These are :

  • Chimay Tripel
